Jo’s distinguished career in local government spans over 25 years, first in the UK and now in New Zealand, and her story is nothing short of inspirational.

As the former Chief Executive of Doncaster Council in the UK, Jo led an exceptional organizational turnaround that earned her recognition as the third most influential person in UK local government by the Local Government Chronicle. Now, as the Chief Executive of Hutt City Council, Jo continues her legacy of transformation. Her approach is a compelling example of how to harness new technology to empower people and build a region’s profile. She recently made waves by challenging her team to create New Zealand’s first AI-narrated podcast for a pre-election report. The result was “AI Jo,” a series of engaging podcasts generated for a cost of virtually nothing.

As Jo says, this project was a case of “not just trusting and using AI tools,” but critically overseeing their use to ensure accuracy and authenticity. This real-world example demonstrates her core philosophy: you don’t need to be a technical expert to drive digital transformation—you need to be a visionary leader who enables and empowers those around you.
